Crafting Simplification Tools
Once we had finished analyzing and organizing the insights we gathered, we drafted our tools. To enhance each tool’s relevance, drive accountability, and spur immediate action, we decided not to focus at the enterprise level but to design exercises for business units, teams, or individuals to use. We took everything we had learned and began crafting exercises that would help people at every step. We tested each one over and over, making changes each time. Finally, we felt we’d crafted a toolkit that could supplement Lean and the other methodologies, helping those who want to take action around simplification.
Use the tools that follow to focus in on the details and specifics of your work. Choose the ones that conform best to your organization’s needs. Some of these tools will take less than half an hour to complete, without training. Many are modular, allowing you to perform the first two steps to get things started or spend more time and see them all the way through.
Simplification isn’t easy, but we strongly believe it shouldn’t be complicated, onerous, or exhausting either. In particular, there’s no need to wait for a lengthy, formal review process. You can make progress now: just sit down with your colleagues and get started with our tools. Here they are, ordered in accordance with our five simplification steps.
